Before the cool done run out
I'll be giving it my bestest
Nothing's going to stop me but divine intervention
I reckon its again my turn to win some or learn some. - Jason Mraz “I'm Yours”
It was in the late afternoon, on the same day, when Yesung woke up to Sohee's ringtone.
“Tell me, tell me, t-t-t-t-tell me-”
In order for Ryeowook's sleep to remain undisturbed, Yesung let go of him and picked up the cellphone. He answered it almost immediately.
“Let's go to the mall,” Sohee said back to him. “I'm waiting outside in the car right now.”
“Why do you need to me to go to the mall with you?” Yesung asked.
“I don't know,” He could imagine her shrugging her shoulders. “All I know is that there's a fabulous pair of shoes on sale right now and I want you to come with me to get them.”
It didn't take much to convince him. He rolled out from under the covers and kissed Ryeowook's sleeping face before he pulled on a jacket.
“I'm leaving you for a little while,” Yesung said quietly. “So I can break up with her, okay?”
After saying that, he left the room and Ryeowook alone.
Yesung found it very hard to break up with somebody.
Since he wasn't born with Heechul's suave, player skills, he was also not born with the knowledge of breaking up with someone. Especially when you were following after them in a mall, looking for this “fabulous” pair of shoes.
“It was here earlier,” Sohee said. “I'm sure of it.”
She said this when they were going down on the escalator. Her and Yesung were standing on one step, side-by-side. It still felt nice to be squished up against her on an empty escalator. He knew that she didn't like taking the elevators for some reason. Maybe this was just an excuse to cozy up next to him? Sohee was the type that couldn't admit to things.
After feeling up her arm against his, she took his hand and pointed at something.
“There! There they are!” She screamed. Sohee ran down the escalator, pulling Yesung behind her. He kept on looking down at the moving stairs, making sure that the both of them wouldn't fall to their deaths. He breathed a sigh of relief when they were off the escalator safely. Why was Sohee so fearless? Her sense of bravery was bigger than his and Ryeowook's, combined.
He waited for her to purchase the shoes, having no interest in seeing what they looked like. She came back with a box, a crumpled up receipt, and a pert smile on her face.
“Done?” he asked.
“Yes,” she nodded, her hair shaking up and down. “Just let me try them on.”
“Okay,” he answered, solemnly. He waited for her to finish putting on her new heels and watched how proud she was of her latest purchase. She stood up again and one leg flew up so Yesung could examine her new shoes.
“Is it okay looking?” she asked with wide eyes. The look on her face reminded him of Ryeowook's, whenever he asked Yesung to read the lyrics for a new song that he had written. They both looked innocent and begging for the truth. Even though it was only for an opinion this time and not some scandal.
“They look good,” Yesung said after some time. Sohee smiled again.
“Then we have to look for an outfit to match these heels,” Sohee tugged onto his arm again and her hand trailed back into his. “Come on, let's go. We don't have enough time.”
He wanted to tell her to stop. He wanted to tell her that he wanted to go home. Most of all, he wanted to tell her that they were breaking up.
But for some reason, he couldn't and let himself be lead by her anyway.
They went through what seemed to be a million departments, trying to look for that perfect outfit. Now he was sitting on a couch, waiting for her to come out from a dressing room. After staring at the interior of the store for awhile, she flew out in a white dress that was short at the skirt. If she didn't look so good, he would have screamed in surprise. But Yesung kept his cool because he didn't want to embarrass the both of them. Especially in a store.
“Well?” Sohee asked.
“It looks good!” Yesung said, clapping for no reason at all. Her lips tightened.
“You sure? I'll murder you if this dress doesn't look good with these heels,” she said coldly. His face turned white and she laughed. Sohee skipped over to him and fell into his lap. He couldn't tell if she had tripped or not, he was just scared by her threat.
“I'm kidding. If you think they look good, then they look good,” she said. She grabbed a bunch of sunglasses from a nearby rack and started trying them out on Yesung's face. While she was trying to see which one looked best on him, she was humming a song. He could recognize the tune easily.
“Is that...'Love U More'?” he asked in a timid voice.
“Yup,” she stopped humming. “I can't sing it as good as you, so I might as well hum it.”
“Oh. Okay,” Yesung stared at her while she started humming again. He could hear Ryeowook's singing voice in her humming. Couldn't she sing something else, like a girl song? Like 4Minute's “Hot Issue”?
“Okay, wait right here,” Sohee told him, even though she knew that there was nowhere else for him to go. She got up from his lap and disappeared through the dressing room's curtains.
Like he always did, he waited for her and decided to move the breaking-up date to another time.
After her second purchase, they walked around the mall for a couple more hours. They weren't really talking to each other because she was too busy observing whatever was on display. The only reason they were still walking together was because she had laced her arm around his.
“Hey,” she dropped her head on his shoulder and looked up at him.
“What?” he asked, using the same tone for the people he was worried for. He used it for Ryeowook often, but never Sohee. She was a bit more independent. Not that it was a bad thing. Not for the two people he was dating.
“These heels are killing me,” she said. “Can you please trade with me?”
“But those are girl shoes,” he said, unamused by her weird request. Sohee took her head off his shoulder and looked at him again. Except her face was similar to Heechul's face whenever he tried not to look bitchy, even though he really was. Sometimes Yesung wondered if Sohee was Heechul's long-lost fraternal twin.
“I said PLEASE,” she said through gritted teeth. Yesung looked around, to see if anybody was watching nearby.
“Now?” he asked, wincing at the thought of it.
“Just until we walk back to the car,” she stopped gritting her teeth. She had a daring smirk on her face instead. He sighed and bent down to unlace his shoes.
“Fine,” he said. Why was he so unable to be a man around anybody anymore?
So Yesung and Sohee walked all the way to her car, ignoring all the stares that people were giving them. Well, Yesung was ignoring them and the people were looking at him. Sohee still looked normal with his shoes on her feet. But he was an overgrown man that was prancing around in heels. Yesung had always wanted to get taller, but not this way.
He let himself take a deep breath of relief when they were sitting in the back of her car. There were so many shopping bags taking up space in the backseat so Yesung couldn't move around to take off her heels. He was also too tired to do anything else, anyway.
When they were close to his place, she kissed him. It was a tiny one, but Yesung could still feel some spark come from it. It wasn't as much the ones he got from Ryeowook's kisses, but it was still enough.
“You taste like strawberry syrup,” she said when she pulled her face away from his.
“I know,” he said. He watched the house get closer and closer to him. If only you knew why.
Sohee had insisted on walking him to the door. Like the simpleton he was around her, he let her.
“Tomorrow's your birthday,” she said, sounding a lot like Ryeowook at that moment.
“I know,” he said for what felt like the millionth time today.
“You know,” she looked down on the ground, looking unlike herself. “I kind of want to cook for you.”
This made him pay attention to her.
“Huh?” he asked before turning his key in the doorknob.
“It's just a thought,” she said quickly.
He wanted to tell her that he was going to be spending his birthday with Ryeowook, but couldn't do it. But he couldn't treat Ryeowook any differently from how he was treating her. He decided that he would spend his birthday by himself without telling anybody. He deserved it for being an indecisive asshole.
“I'm spending it with my mom,” he made up an excuse. She looked up at him.
“Oh. Okay,” she said, fixing her hair as if she wasn't bothered by that at all. Not even a little bit. “I'm cool with that.”
“I'm glad you understand,” he said, making sure that he was going to tell Ryeowook the exact same thing. He opened the door and just to be polite, he kissed Sohee on the cheek.
“But thanks,” he said. She nodded and ran back to her car.
Yesung closed the door behind him and was enveloped into another hug. Except it was Ryeowook who was doing it to him this time.
“Where did you go? I woke up by myself,” Ryeowook asked. Yesung gulped and tried to find the right words to say. Should he tell him the truth? He hugged him back instead.
“We're still be celebrating your birthday tomorrow, right? What restaurant do you want to go to?” Ryeowook asked, looking up into Yesung's eyes. Before he could tell him anything, the front door swung open and Sohee came in. The other “woman” in in his life.
Sohee came in to see Yesung and Ryeowook enclosed in a hug. She was about to say something but Yesung let go of Ryeowook and stood between them. He couldn't keep it in anymore. He needed to end it between all three of them.
“Ryeowook! Sohee! I'm in love with the both of you!” he said, screwing his eyes shut.
“Huh?” Ryeowook's mouth dropped open.
“What?” Sohee lifted her eyebrow.
“You can think of it as cheating or whatever, but I'm in love with you! Both of you! I can't choose so I'll break up with the both of you! Right now!” Yesung yelled. He opened his eyes again to see the look at the other two in the room. They didn't look angry or sad. They just looked uncomfortable and uncertain.
“Oh,” Sohee broke the silence. “I just came back for my heels. You're still wearing them.”
Yesung looked down at his feet. He was still wearing them. He could hear a giggle come from somebody and saw that it was Ryeowook. He was trying to cover up his laughter by putting a hand over his mouth.
Embarrassed, Yesung stepped out of the heels and gave them back to Sohee, who was holding her hands out for them. Without waiting to get his shoes back from her, he sped upstairs.
“Where are you going?” Ryeowook asked from afar. Yesung didn't answer. He just kept on walking and walking until he was in Siwon's room again.
“Hey,” Yesung prodded the sleeping giant. Now that he wasn't wearing the heels anymore, he felt a lot more smaller in size. “Get out. Let me sleep here for tonight.”
“What?” Siwon asked in a deep, hoarse voice. He couldn't understand what Yesung was saying because he was still half-asleep. But he understood when Yesung shoved him off the bed, taking advantage of how weak he was at this moment. He didn't bother to ask why Yesung wanted to sleep in his bed so badly so he just walked into Heechul's bedroom, where he and Hankyung were sleeping.
“Something is wrong with Yesung,” he went to the other side of Heechul and laid there. “He's freaking out about something and needs to sleep in my bed.”
“Really?” Hankyung asked. “Why?”
“Because he sucks at two-timing. That's why,” Heechul threw a pillow over Hankyung's face to answer his question. The stable threesome went back to sleep.
Yesung woke up, alone and scared. It was his birthday and he was going to spend it alone. Maybe he should have called his mother beforehand to see if she wanted to keep him company for his birthday. He walked out of Siwon's room, passing Heechul's room along the way.
“Happy birthday, hyung!” Siwon said cheerfully, not all mad about being kicked out of his room last night.
“Thanks,” Yesung said, not expecting for any rainbows and sunshine today.
“I just wanted you to know that letting you sleep in my bed was your birthday present,” Siwon said, trying to get out of gift shopping in a very obvious way.
“I'll let you sleep in my bed too,” Hankyung said, leaning on Siwon's shoulder. “As a birthday present, of course.”
“You guys are cheap,” Yesung said bitterly, but he thanked them anyway. Then Heechul came out of the bathroom with a toothbrush hanging from the side of his mouth.
“Is that mine?” Yesung squinted his eyes to look at the color of the toothbrush but Heechul stopped him by putting a hand in his face.
“I bet you screwed up yesterday,” Heechul said. “And to answer your question, yes, this is your toothbrush.”
Yesung forgot about the toothbrush and started rubbing his arms. He didn't want to remember that yesterday really DID happen. Now he was going to go through millions of silent conversations with Ryeowook. At least Sohee was a lot more easier to avoid. But he found himself missing their dates already. No wait, he was missing the both of them already.
He was about to head back to Siwon's room-or Hankyung's, it didn't really matter-but Heechul grabbed his shoulder and turned him around.
“You better go downstairs and get your dignity,” Heechul said. “Ryeowook is still downstairs, cooking you something for your birthday.”
“But why??” Yesung whined. Why was Ryeowook still being nice to him? Did he know how much that was hurting him? Or going to hurt him?
Putting his smashed self esteem aside, Yesung followed Heechul's advice and walked downstairs. Of course, he expected to see Ryeowook at his kitchen post, but he didn't except to see Sohee standing beside him.
“Sohee? Ryeowook?” he called out. The both of them turned around with smiles on their faces.
“Good morning!” Ryeowook said, his face gleaming.
“Happy birthday!” Sohee said. Then they turned back to the stove.
“Wait, what are you guys doing here?” Yesung asked, trying to grasp what was going on. Ryeowook and Sohee...together? Was this revenge? Were they dating each other to make Yesung jealous? He didn't want to admit it, but their plan was working really well.
“Cooking for you, of course! What else do you think we're doing?” Ryeowook started guiding Sohee's hand, which had a spatula in it. “No, Sohee. You're flipping the pancake all wrong.”
“Aren't you guys supposed to be angry at me? And trying to make me jealous by dating each other?” Yesung asked. Sohee turned around, confused. Ryeowook didn't pay any attention, he was still working on the food. When he was cooking, he couldn't be bothered.
“No. Why would we be angry at you? You told us that you were in love with the both of us,” Sohee said. She grabbed a plate of finished pancakes and started eating the one on top. “Man. These pancakes are good. No wonder you tasted like strawberry syrup yesterday.”
“But I cheated on you!” Yesung said, trying not to choke on his words. Sohee shrugged her shoulders.
“You told us to think of it however we wanted to,” Sohee said. “You're in love with the both of us and you couldn't decide. Besides, it's my fault anyway. Ryeowook's, too.”
“What?” Ryeowook took his attention away from the pan. “What did I do?”
“You left Yesung for Henry, making him come to me in his time of need,” Sohee started making calculations. “Also I didn't push you away. So it's mostly my fault.”
“Well, that is true,” Ryeowook turned the heat off so he could join the conversation. He walked over to Yesung and took his hand.
“It's okay. I already knew about Sohee,” Ryeowook said.
“Yeah, we're not stupid,” Sohee said, her voice muffled by the second pancake.
“I have to admit. I was angry for a little bit,” Ryeowook gripped Yesung's hand a little bit tighter. “But then I realized that it's easier with Sohee around. She can yell at you when I can't-”
“Yup,” Sohee said.
“-she can bring you out to expensive restaurants whenever I don't feel like cooking for you-”
“-she can buy you all the clothes you need-”
“-and she can yell at you when I can't. Oh wait, I already said that,” Ryeowook said, counting his fingers to see if he did.
“So you guys have been plotting this for awhile?” Yesung asked. The both of them shook their heads.
“We knew about each other, but we never talked about it until your confession yesterday. We just flowed with the schedule, I guess,” Sohee put down the plate of pancakes. “I don't mind sharing you. As long as you're happy.”
“Me too,” Ryeowook kissed Yesung on the forehead. “I love you.”
“I don't love you,” Sohee smiled. Yesung couldn't tell if she was lying or not. At least one of them still loved him. Then she leaned in closer to Yesung's ear.
“But if I happened to say 'I love you, too' then I know your head will explode just thinking about it,” Sohee whispered. “Happy birthday, again.”
“I heard that,” Ryeowook said, but he was still smiling. He turned to Yesung. “Happy birthday.”
“I don't deserve you guys,” Yesung said, still fazed by everything that they had told him. So they knew about each other, but didn't say anything about it? Even though they were using him in the end, Yesung felt like his heart had been touched for the first time in his life.
“If Siwon, Hankyung, and Heechul can do it,” Ryeowook looked at Sohee and Yesung. “Then I can do it.”
Sohee shrugged her shoulders again. “I just don't find anything wrong with it.”
“Again, I don't deserve you-” Yesung wanted to hug the both of them but Sohee stopped him by poking the spatula into his side.
“Yes, we know what you're going to say. Now go back to your room and wait until your celebratory breakfast is finished. And if the pancakes suck, then I'll just make reservations at a restaurant,” Sohee put the spatula up to her lips to conceal the devious look she had on her face. “Now go.”
Yesung did what she told him and went back upstairs. He could still hear Ryeowook and Sohee bickering amongst themselves.
“What? I'm sure the pancakes I will make for him will come out good.”
“Then you better help me with mine.”
“Just do it.”
Yesung thought about how Ryeowook was going to get used to Sohee. He smiled at the thought of it. He was still smiling when he ran into Heechul again.
“You suck at two-timing,” Heechul scratched his head, wondering how Yesung had managed to get out of trouble this time. “But you've still got the two cutest people in the world.”
“I know,” Yesung said. This time, he said it happily. He swung his arm around Heechul.
“Happy birthday,” Heechul got out of feeling a little bit jealous. He still had Siwon and Hankyung, the two most sexiest beasts in the world. Then he suddenly had an amazing idea. “Maybe we can go on a big group date soon! Like a sextet-”
Yesung turned to him with a very strained smile on his face.
“No. Don't get any ideas.”
Heechul stayed quiet for the rest of Yesung's birthday. That was his gift to him.
